About Toastmasters International and Club 1600
Toastmasters International is a non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership. The first Toastmasters club was established on October 22, 1924, in Santa Ana, California, by Dr. Ralph Smedley, who conceived and developed the idea of helping others to speak more efficiently. More clubs were formed, and Toastmasters International was formed, and Incorporated under California Law on December 19, 1932.
Toastmasters Club 1600 was formed in 1968 by Ernest T. Strachan, Edward Carey, Commander Allan Smell, Alfred T. Maycock, and Peter Drudge. Club 1600 was formed as an all male toastmasters club. Club 1600 continues to be deeply rooted in its philosophy that it takes a man to train a male to be a true man; hence the movement to preserve Club 1600 as the last battalion of men dedicated to building the leadership and communication skills of the Bahamian male, in a focused and concentrated environment.
